KIMBERLEY AFTER DARK

THE EFFECT IS LOCAL.

ZAZA stays true to the medicinal roots of cannabis, honouring the plant’s history and the communities that have carried its legacy forward. Our premium approach is an expression of that respect: a considered experience shaped by care, quality and a deep appreciation for cannabis culture. We honour where it began while bringing intention and refinement to how it is experienced today.

TODAY IN CANNABIS CULTURE

A little history. A fresh perspective. A different story each day — swipe or drag to explore.

  • 01 / ROOTS & RITUALS

    More than a modern moment.

Long before contemporary cannabis culture, hemp fibres were used to make rope, cloth and paper. The plant’s story connects everyday craft, trade and human ingenuity across centuries.

  • 02 / 1753

    A name for the archive.

In 1753, botanist Carl Linnaeus published the name Cannabis sativa in Species Plantarum. A familiar name today, it forms part of the long effort to describe and understand the natural world.

  • 03 / 1964

    A molecule meets the spotlight.

In 1964, Raphael Mechoulam and Yechiel Gaoni reported the isolation and structure of delta-9-THC. Their work became an important milestone in modern cannabinoid research.

  • 04 / 1992

The story was inside us, too.

Researchers identified anandamide in 1992, a molecule made by the body that acts at cannabinoid receptors. Its name draws on ananda, the Sanskrit word for bliss — a memorable name for a scientific discovery.

  • 05 / SOUTH AFRICA · 2018

    A local turning point.

South Africa’s Constitutional Court delivered a landmark cannabis privacy judgment in 2018 concerning adults’ private use and possession. It marked a major moment in the country’s ongoing cannabis conversation. This history note is not legal advice.

  • 06 / BOTANICAL CONNECTIONS

    That familiar scent has company.

Terpenes help give many plants their distinctive aromas. Limonene is associated with citrus, while pinene is found in pine. Both can also occur in cannabis — a reminder that its aromatic story belongs to a much wider botanical world.

  • 07 / LIVING CULTURE

    History lives in people.

Cannabis history is more than a timeline of discoveries. It also lives in language, traditions and communities that have preserved knowledge across generations. At ZAZA, respecting the plant means remembering the people behind its story.
